In the Beginning, God

← Foundations

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1

The Truth

Scripture does not open with an argument for God’s existence. It opens with him already there, already at work, already speaking the world into being. Before there is a story to tell, there is a God to tell it. Every page after this one rests on that first sentence.

Notice what is not said. There is no council of gods, no struggle, no accident. One God, unrivaled and unhurried, brings order out of formless dark simply by speaking. Power that has to force its way is not the kind of power on display here. This is authority so complete it needs no explanation and no help.

This matters for the thirty days ahead. You cannot know the Son or the Spirit rightly if the Father you start with is fuzzy, distant, or borrowed from somewhere other than his own word. Foundations are not exciting. They are load-bearing. Get this one wrong and everything you build later leans.

So begin here, plainly. There is a God. He was before anything else was. He made what exists on purpose, by his word, and called it good. Let that settle before you move to the next thing you want to know about him.

Live This Truth

  • Read Genesis 1 slowly today, out loud if you can.
  • Write one sentence: what does it mean that God existed before anything else did.
  • Thank him today specifically for something he made.

Prayer

Father, before I ask you for anything, let me simply see you as you are: the one who was already there, already speaking, already good. Ground me in this today. Amen.

Carry this today

Before anything else, there is God.
