“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
The Truth
Everything so far this week has been true and, on its own, a little overwhelming. A God who is self-existent, holy, all-knowing, sovereign, and cannot lie could easily remain a majestic stranger. This verse closes that gap. The God with all that power and holiness has adopted you, and the word he wants you to use for him is the intimate one: Abba.
Abba was not a formal word. It was the word a child used, close and unguarded. Paul is not softening God’s greatness here. He is telling you what that greatness is for. Omnipotence in the hands of a stranger would be frightening. Omnipotence in the hands of your Father is the safest place in the universe.
Notice what you did not receive: the spirit of bondage again to fear. Slaves relate to a master through anxious performance, always managing the relationship, never fully at ease. Sons relate to a father through belonging that was settled before they did anything to earn it. You do not perform your way into this. It was given.
So the same God who searches your every thought and knows the end from the beginning invites you to call him Abba. Let both things be true at once today: he is high above you, and he is close to you as a Father.
Live This Truth
- Say the word Abba to God today, slowly, and notice your own resistance to it.
- Name one way you relate to God more like a slave than a son.
- Do one thing today from belonging rather than to earn his approval.
Prayer
Abba, Father, I have related to you like a master to manage instead of a Father who already claimed me. Teach me to rest in adoption, not perform for approval. I am your son. Amen.
Carry this today
High above me, and close as a Father.
