← The Face

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
Genesis 1:27

The Face

This is the first thing scripture ever says about human identity, before any account of performance, achievement, or failure. In his own image, stated twice for weight, is the actual starting point, not something earned afterward through sufficient accomplishment, but the given, original condition of every human being.

Notice this precedes the fall entirely. Whatever was damaged, distorted, or complicated by sin came after this original declaration, not instead of it. Image bearing is not a status you are working toward. It is the actual, factual starting point scripture places you at before anything else is said about you.

This is worth holding against however much your own sense of worth has quietly become tied to performance, achievement, or the approval of others, as if image bearing were a status still to be earned rather than the given fact this verse states plainly, in the very first chapter, before anything else about you is known.

Whatever today has already told you about your own worth, through comparison, failure, or simple exhaustion, return to this first, foundational fact. You were made in his own image, before anything else was true about you, and that fact has not changed since the day this verse was first written.

Turn Your Face

  • Notice any place your sense of worth has become tied to performance rather than this given fact.
  • Return today to this first, foundational identity, before any achievement or failure is added.
  • Thank God specifically for being made in his image, not for anything you have yet done.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that I was made in your own image, before anything else was true about me. Let this be my actual starting point today, not something I must first earn. Amen.

Carry this today

Image bearing is the given starting point, not a status still to be earned.
