Search Me, O God

Part Two · Breaking Up · 1 minute read

← The Fallow

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24

The Ground

David does not ask God to confirm what he already assumes about himself. He asks for an actual search, try me, an invitation for God to examine ground David cannot fully see on his own. This is a bold request, since genuine searching sometimes surfaces things the one searched did not want to find.

Notice this prayer comes at the end of a psalm largely devoted to celebrating how thoroughly God already knows David, every thought, every word, every place he has ever been. Only after that extensive celebration of being known does David ask for the search to actually do its work, see if there be any wicked way in me.

This is the posture breaking up fallow ground actually requires: not a general willingness to change someday, but a specific invitation for God to search the actual, particular ground you are standing on, and to name what he finds there honestly, even if it is uncomfortable to hear.

Pray this today as an actual request, not a formality. Ask God to search you, specifically, and to show you anything in your own ground that still needs breaking before it can receive what he wants to plant there next.

Tend the Ground

  • Pray this verse today as a genuine request, not a routine formality.
  • Sit quietly afterward, actually listening for what God might show you.
  • Receive whatever surfaces without defensiveness, as ground worth breaking, not hiding.

Prayer

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. Show me anything in my own ground that still needs breaking. Lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

Carry this today

Invite the search. Do not merely assume you already know what it will find.
