Not Forsaking the Assembling

Part One · Gathered · 1 minute read

← The Fellowship

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:24-25

The Body

This verse names a real, existing pattern, as the manner of some is, people who had genuinely stopped assembling together, before it names the correction. This was not a hypothetical temptation the author invented. It was already happening, drift away from gathered community into isolated, private faith, common enough to require this direct address.

Notice consider one another comes before the instruction not to forsake assembling. This is not merely showing up physically while remaining privately disengaged. It is active consideration, genuine attention to the people around you, aimed specifically at provoking unto love and good works, mutual influence flowing in both directions, not passive attendance.

This sets the whole book’s opening theme. Gathering is not incidental to faith, a nice addition for those who happen to enjoy community. It is named here as necessary, its absence a genuine danger worth direct correction, and its presence aimed at active, mutual provocation toward love, not merely toward comfortable company.

Whatever has been pulling you toward the manner of some, away from genuine assembling, name it honestly today. This first day of this book begins exactly where Hebrews begins, with the plain, direct call not to forsake what so many quietly, gradually, drift away from.

Strengthen the Body

  • Name honestly any drift toward forsaking genuine assembling in your own life lately.
  • Consider one specific person today, aimed at provoking them toward love and good works.
  • Take one concrete step this week toward gathering, not merely intending to eventually.

Prayer

Lord, forgive any drift toward forsaking genuine assembling. Provoke me toward love and good works through real, considered community, not isolated faith. Amen.

Carry this today

Gathering is not incidental to faith. It is necessary.
