“I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.”
The Prayer
The psalmist compares his waiting to something specific and vivid: a watchman waiting through the night for morning to finally arrive. Anyone who has kept a genuine watch through dark, uncertain hours knows the particular intensity of that waiting, alert, straining toward the first sign of light, counting the hours until relief finally comes.
And notice the psalmist claims his own waiting for the Lord exceeds even that intensity, repeated twice for emphasis, more than they that watch for the morning. This is not casual, half-attentive hoping. It is described as more urgent, more focused, more genuinely longed for than even a night watchman’s keen attention to the coming dawn.
This sets a high bar for what genuine waiting on God actually looks like, not passive, distracted hoping but active, alert longing, the kind that would keep a person genuinely straining toward whatever sign of his coming presence or answer might appear, refusing to grow numb or inattentive through the length of the waiting.
Whatever you are currently waiting on God for, let this psalm reset your own intensity. Not casual hoping in the background of an otherwise unaffected life, but genuine, alert longing, watching as intently as anyone has ever watched for a dawn they desperately needed to see.
Watch and Pray
- Name what you are currently waiting on God for, specifically.
- Examine whether your waiting is alert and intense, or casual and distracted.
- Watch today with the intensity of someone straining for a desperately needed dawn.
Pray This
Lord, I wait for you, and I want my soul to wait the way this psalm describes, more than a watchman waits for morning. Sharpen my longing, and keep me alert in this waiting. Amen.
Carry this today
