“And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.”
The Prayer
Jacob wrestles through the night with a figure scripture describes in ways that suggest divine encounter, and as dawn approaches and the figure asks to be released, Jacob refuses. I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. This is persistent, even stubborn, prayer, refusing to release the encounter until something specific is given.
This is a different picture of persistence than gentle, patient waiting. It is closer to holding on with everything you have, through exhaustion, through injury, since this same encounter leaves Jacob permanently marked, refusing to simply let the moment pass without wrestling something real out of it.
Notice this is not disrespectful demand but genuine, costly pursuit of blessing, willing to be hurt, willing to wrestle through an entire night, rather than settle for an easier, less costly encounter that ends before the blessing is actually secured. Jacob’s persistence here is not casual. It costs him something physical and lasting.
Whatever you are wrestling for in prayer today, something you refuse to release without a real answer, consider Jacob’s example, not as recklessness, but as the kind of costly, persistent holding on that some genuine blessings apparently require. Do not let go too easily. Wrestle until the blessing actually comes.
Watch and Pray
- Name what you have been wrestling for in prayer, tempted to release too easily.
- Hold on today with Jacob’s persistence, refusing to let go without an actual answer.
- Accept that some blessings may cost something real to actually secure through prayer.
Pray This
Lord, like Jacob, I will not let go until you bless me. Give me the persistence to wrestle through this, even at real cost, rather than releasing too easily. Amen.
Carry this today
