God Forbid That I Should Cease

Part Three · the Watch · 2 minute read

← The Fervent

“Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way.”
1 Samuel 12:23

The Prayer

Samuel says something remarkable here, framing the cessation of intercessory prayer not as a neutral choice, a simple change in priority or focus, but as an actual sin against the LORD. This is a high view of intercession, treating the ongoing responsibility to pray for others as a genuine moral obligation, not an optional extra activity.

This is worth sitting with, especially given the context. Samuel says this to a people who had just rejected his leadership, choosing a king instead, in a decision Samuel himself had warned against. He would have every reasonable justification to stop praying for a people who had just sidelined him. Instead, he names ceasing to pray for them as something he refuses to let himself do.

This models intercession that does not depend on the relationship being currently pleasant, or the people being prayed for currently deserving it in any obvious sense. Samuel’s commitment to keep praying is not contingent on Israel’s behavior toward him. It is a standing commitment, held regardless of how he has personally been treated.

Consider who you may have quietly stopped praying for, whether through hurt, rejection, or simple neglect over time. Samuel’s example suggests this cessation is worth examining seriously, not as a minor lapse but as something to actually repent of and reverse, resuming intercession regardless of the relationship’s current condition.

Watch and Pray

  • Name someone you have quietly stopped praying for, for whatever reason.
  • Recommit to praying for them today, regardless of the current state of the relationship.
  • Consider ceasing to pray for someone as seriously as Samuel names it here.

Pray This

Lord, forbid that I should sin against you in ceasing to pray for those you have placed in my life. Let me resume that intercession today, regardless of how I have been treated. Amen.

Carry this today

Ceasing to pray for someone is not neutral. Resume it today.
