The Root of All Evil

← The First

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
1 Timothy 6:10

The Treasure

Paul names love of money specifically, not money itself, as the actual root named here. This distinction matters. Money itself is morally neutral, a tool capable of genuine good use. It is the love of it, disordered affection placing money in the position only God should occupy, that this verse names as genuinely dangerous, the root many kinds of evil actually grow from.

Notice the specific consequence named: erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. This is not merely external financial trouble, but internal, spiritual damage, faith itself derailed, self-inflicted sorrow, described as the actual fruit this particular root produces when love of money is allowed to take hold.

This is worth examining honestly, not with generic guilt about having or wanting money, but with specific attention to whether love, genuine emotional attachment and priority, has attached itself to money in a way that has begun eroding your own faith or producing the self- inflicted sorrows this verse names directly.

Consider today whether love of money, distinct from simply needing or using it responsibly, has taken root anywhere in your own heart. Name it honestly, and bring it to God today, asking him to remove this particular root before it produces the sorrows this verse warns are its actual, eventual fruit.

Steward the Treasure

  • Distinguish honestly between needing money and loving it, in your own actual heart.
  • Name any place love of money has begun eroding your faith or producing sorrow.
  • Bring that root to God today, specifically, asking him to remove it before it grows further.

Prayer

Lord, remove any love of money that has taken root in me. Let me use money as a tool, not love it as a master, before it produces the sorrows this verse describes. Amen.

Carry this today

Not money itself, but love of it, is the dangerous root.
