Things Above

Part One · Seek First · 2 minute read

← The First

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2

The Treasure

Paul closes this first movement’s arc with the same seeking language day one began with, but now specifically directed: things above, not things on the earth. This closes the loop this whole first movement has traced, seeking the kingdom first, refusing divided mastery, placing treasure carefully, guarding against love of money, resting in contentment, avoiding both extremes.

Notice set your affection, active, deliberate direction of the heart’s actual attachment, not merely passive avoidance of earthly things, but positive, intentional orientation toward things above. This is not primarily a list of prohibitions this movement has walked through, but a genuine redirection of affection itself, toward Christ, seated above.

This closing instruction assumes if ye then be risen with Christ, grounding the whole instruction in a settled spiritual reality, not merely an aspirational goal. Setting affection on things above is not attempting to earn or achieve a status you do not yet have. It flows from a status, risen with Christ, already genuinely true.

As this movement closes, examine where your own affection has actually been set this week, earth or above, and let this closing instruction shape your posture heading into the next movement’s more active exploration of sowing. Set your affection on things above. Let this be your actual, settled orientation, not merely an aspiration.

Steward the Treasure

  • Examine honestly where your affection has actually been set this week, earth or above.
  • Set it deliberately today on things above, grounded in your status as risen with Christ.
  • Carry this settled orientation forward into this week’s more active practice of generosity.

Prayer

Lord, since I am risen with Christ, let me set my affection genuinely on things above, not on things on the earth. Let this be settled orientation, not mere aspiration. Amen.

Carry this today

Affection set above flows from a status already true, not one still being earned.
