I Am the Door

Part Two · the Pasture · 1 minute read

← The Flock

“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
John 10:9

With the Shepherd

Shepherds in the ancient world often slept across the entrance of a sheepfold at night, literally becoming the door, so that nothing could enter or leave without passing through them directly. Jesus takes up this image deliberately. He is not merely a guide standing nearby. He is the actual entrance, the only way in and out of genuine safety.

Notice the phrase go in and out, and find pasture. This is not describing a sheep permanently confined, unable to move. It describes freedom, movement, actual life, all made possible specifically because the door is trustworthy. Security through Christ does not mean restriction. It means the freedom to actually move and find provision, safely.

This corrects two opposite errors. One imagines faith as pure confinement, safety purchased at the cost of all freedom. The other imagines freedom as the absence of any door at all, wide open to every danger. Jesus describes something better than either: real freedom, going in and out, made possible precisely because of a trustworthy, secure door.

Whatever movement or freedom you need today, trust that it is found through him, not around him. He is not restricting your life by being the door. He is making genuine freedom and provision possible because of it.

Follow His Voice

  • Notice any freedom you have sought around him rather than through him.
  • Trust today that real freedom and provision are found through the door, not apart from it.
  • Go in and out today, resting in the security he provides rather than resisting it.

Prayer

Lord, you are the door, and through you I find real freedom, not confinement. Let me go in and out today, resting in your security rather than resisting it. Amen.

Carry this today

He is not restricting freedom. He is making it possible.
