Forgetting Those Things Which Are Behind

Part Three · Walk in It · 1 minute read

← The Fork

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:13-14

The Path

Paul names a specific, deliberate practice here: forgetting those things which are behind, an active discipline, not simply the passive fading of memory over time, but a genuine, ongoing choice to release what lies behind in order to genuinely reach forth unto those things which are before, undistracted by what has already been settled.

Notice this one thing I do, a singular, focused commitment, not divided attention between the forward path and whatever alternative was left behind at the fork. Paul’s own energy is described as concentrated specifically forward, reaching, pressing, toward the mark, not split between forward movement and backward glancing.

This is worth examining against however much your own energy, even after genuine commitment has been made, remains quietly divided, part reaching forward, part still tangled with what was left behind, alternative paths, other possibilities, unresolved what-ifs still occupying attention that could otherwise be genuinely pressed forward.

Whatever lies behind your own crossroads, the path not taken, the alternative left behind, practice today this same deliberate forgetting Paul describes, not denial that it existed, but genuine release of its ongoing claim on your attention, so that your own energy, like his, can be genuinely, singularly pressed toward what lies ahead.

Walk the Path

  • Notice whatever alternative path continues to quietly claim part of your attention.
  • Practice deliberate forgetting today, releasing its ongoing claim, not merely ignoring it superficially.
  • Press forward today with more singular, undivided focus toward what actually lies ahead.

Prayer

Lord, help me forget those things which are behind, and reach forth unto those things which are before, pressing toward the mark with undivided, singular focus. Amen.

Carry this today

Deliberate forgetting releases what is behind so energy can genuinely press forward.
