God Is Our Refuge

Part One · the Storm · 2 minute read

← The Fortress

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”
Psalm 46:1-2

The Shelter

This psalm does not open by describing a peaceful, undisturbed life. It opens by naming the worst possible disruption its writer can imagine, the earth removed, mountains carried into the sea, the most stable things in the ancient imagination coming apart. And it names God as refuge specifically against that backdrop, not against smaller, more manageable troubles.

Notice the word therefore. It does not follow a description of safety. It follows a description of the earth itself failing. Therefore will not we fear is not a claim that nothing frightening is happening. It is a claim about where the writer’s fear has been relocated, out of the shaking ground and into a refuge that does not shake with it.

This is worth sitting with honestly before this book moves any further. A refuge is not needed in calm weather. The entire concept only makes sense against a real storm, real danger, real ground giving way. If you have come to these pages because something in your own life has genuinely been shaken, this psalm was written for exactly that condition, not for easier ones.

Whatever earth is currently moving under you, whatever mountains feel like they are being carried into the sea, this verse does not ask you to pretend otherwise. It offers you a refuge steady enough to hold, precisely because the ground you are standing on is not.

Take Refuge

  • Name honestly what feels like shaking ground in your life right now.
  • Say the verse over that specific situation, out loud, today.
  • Bring your fear to the refuge rather than to the shaking ground itself.

Prayer

Lord, my ground feels like it is shaking today. I bring my fear to you, my refuge, not to the shaking itself. Be my very present help in this trouble. Amen.

Carry this today

A refuge is not needed in calm weather. This is exactly what it is for.
