“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him... Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.”
The Shelter
David speaks first to his own soul in this psalm, an act of deliberate self-address, instructing his own inner life rather than simply being carried along by whatever it currently feels. Wait thou only upon God is not passive resignation. It is an active, chosen posture, a soul being directed rather than left to drift.
Notice the invitation that follows, extended beyond David to a wider people: pour out your heart before him. This is not a call to composed, careful prayer, edited for presentability. It is pour out, full and unrestrained, everything currently held in the heart, given directly to the one this whole psalm has just named as refuge.
This closes the second movement of this book by gathering everything the previous nine days have practiced into one clear instruction. You have named the storm honestly. You have entered the refuge, the rock, the healing, the hiding, the comfort, the strengthening. Now, simply, pour it all out before him, unrestrained, trusting the refuge to actually hold what is poured into it.
Whatever remains unspoken in your heart today, however unedited or messy, this is the invitation waiting for it. Pour it out before him. God is a refuge for us, sturdy enough to receive exactly what is actually there, not merely the composed version you might otherwise present.
Take Refuge
- Speak to your own soul today, the way David does, directing it rather than drifting with it.
- Pour out your heart before God today, unedited, trusting the refuge to hold it.
- Trust him at all times, specifically today, with whatever remains unspoken.
Prayer
Lord, I pour out my heart before you today, unedited, everything I have been holding back. You are a refuge sturdy enough to receive it all. Trust in this, my soul. Amen.
Carry this today
Pour it all out. The refuge is sturdy enough to hold it.
