Who Shall Separate Us

Part Three · the Rock · 2 minute read

← The Fortress

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?... Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.”
Romans 8:35, 37-39

The Shelter

Paul builds this passage as an exhaustive list, deliberately covering every category he can name, death, life, angels, powers, present, future, height, depth, any other creature, precisely so that nothing is left uncovered. This is not vague reassurance. It is a comprehensive, careful accounting, designed to close every possible gap where doubt about God’s love might otherwise slip in.

Notice this list includes death itself. Whatever grief you are walking through, even the deepest loss this list could name, is explicitly included in what cannot separate you from the love of Christ. Paul does not need to soften this claim for the hardest cases. He states it plainly enough to cover them by name.

Notice also more than conquerors, stated in the present tense, in all these things, not after them, not once they are finally resolved. This is not a promise reserved for the far side of grief, once it has been fully processed and left behind. It is a present reality, true in the middle of whatever these things currently are for you.

Whatever specific loss or fear feels like it might separate you from God’s love today, this passage was written comprehensively enough to include it. Nothing in your current grief has slipped through a gap this list left open. You remain, right now, held by a love nothing on this list, and nothing outside it, can separate you from.

Take Refuge

  • Name your specific fear of separation from God’s love, whatever form it takes.
  • Check it against this exhaustive list, and notice it is already covered.
  • Receive today that you are more than a conqueror now, in the middle of this, not only after it.

Prayer

Lord, nothing in my current grief, not even death itself, can separate me from your love. I am more than a conqueror right now, in the middle of this, through you. Amen.

Carry this today

Nothing on this list left a gap. You are still held.
