Be Still, and Know That I Am God

Part Three · the Rock · 2 minute read

← The Fortress

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Psalm 46:10-11

The Shelter

Thirty days ago this book began in the same psalm, God is our refuge and strength, spoken against an earth being removed and mountains carried into the sea. This closing verse returns to that same psalm, now further along, with a different instruction: be still, and know that I am God. The storm named on day one has not been denied. It has simply been walked all the way through.

Notice this stillness is not the absence of everything this book has walked through, the honest tears, the unresolved psalm, the fear, the darkness, the physical weariness, the feeling of forsakenness. It comes after all of it, on the other side of a refuge actually entered and a rock actually reached, not as a bypass around the storm but as its far shore.

The LORD of hosts is with us closes this psalm the way it opened, with presence as the actual ground of confidence, not the absence of trouble. The mountains being carried into the sea on day one and the stillness commanded here on day thirty are held by the same refuge, the same fortress, the same God, unchanged across every day between them.

You began this book naming a storm honestly. You end it here, still, knowing. The fortress that received your grief on day one is the same fortress you are being told, today, to be still within. Be still, and know. He is still your refuge.

Take Refuge

  • Write down the single truth from these thirty days that most steadied your grief.
  • Practice actual stillness today, even briefly, trusting the God this whole book has named.
  • Tell one person this week something true about the fortress you did not know a month ago.

Prayer

Lord, I began this book in a storm, and I end it here, still, knowing you are God. You have been my refuge and fortress the whole way through. Be still in me now. Amen.

Carry this today

Be still, and know. The fortress that held day one is holding you still.

The Fortress Still Stands

Thirty days ago you named a storm honestly, ground shaking, mountains carried into the sea.

You know now: the refuge held. The rock was reached. The fortress did not fall.

Whatever storms remain ahead, you do not walk into them as a stranger to this shelter anymore. Be still, and know.

Be still, and know that I am God... The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
