“And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them.”
The Refining
Zechariah pairs two different metals and two different processes, silver refined and gold tried, because scripture does not pretend every fire looks the same. Some trials burn off impurity you can see, quick and identifiable. Others test something deeper and slower, proving what was already there rather than removing what was added.
Whichever kind of fire you are in, notice what the passage says comes out of it: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them. The furnace is not only refining character. It is refining relationship, driving you toward a dependence on God that comfort rarely produces on its own.
This is worth being honest about. Most of us call on God’s name more urgently in the fire than we ever did in the ease before it. That is not a flaw in your faith. It may be exactly what the fire is for, stripping away the self-sufficiency that quietly keeps you from calling on him at all.
So let this fire do that specific work today. Not just burn off what is false. Drive you, again, to actually call on his name, and to hear him answer.
In the Fire
- Notice whether this trial has driven you closer to God or further from him.
- Call on his name today specifically, about this specific fire.
- Expect him to hear you, as this promise says he will.
Prayer
Lord, refine what needs refining and try what needs trying, but do the deeper work too: draw me to call on your name, and let me know you hear me. Amen.
Carry this today
The fire is refining more than character. It is refining dependence.
