Part One · Weary · 1 minute read

← The Sabbath

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work.”
Exodus 20:8-10

The Rest

This instruction arrives as one of the ten commandments, not a minor suggestion among lesser rules, but genuine, weighty commandment, worth holding as this whole book’s own starting claim, rest itself named as this significant, not optional but genuinely, seriously commanded.

Notice remember, suggesting something already known, already established, now simply needing active recall, worth holding as honest acknowledgment that genuine rest is not a foreign concept but something you already, actually know, requiring remembering rather than entirely new learning.

This is worth holding against however much your own life has quietly treated ceaseless work as the actual, unstated rule, and rest as the genuine exception, rather than this commandment’s own actual ordering, six days labour, and then, deliberately commanded rest.

Consider today honestly whether your own life has quietly reversed this commandment’s actual order, and receive this book’s own honest starting point, remember the sabbath day, worth taking as seriously as any other commandment you would never consider optional.

Practice Rest

  • Notice honestly whether your own life has reversed this commandment’s actual order.
  • Remember today, specifically, what genuine sabbath rest once meant, or was meant to mean.
  • Consider this commandment with the same seriousness you would give any other, not treated as optional.

Prayer

Lord, help me remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Let this be genuine, weighty commandment in my own life, not a minor suggestion easily set aside for endless labour. Amen.

Carry this today

Rest is genuinely commanded, not merely suggested. This book begins there.
