Dwell According to Knowledge

Part Two · Pruning · 1 minute read

← The Vineyard

“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life.”
1 Peter 3:7

The Vine

Peter instructs husbands to dwell with their wives according to knowledge, a striking phrase suggesting marriage requires genuine, ongoing study, actual understanding of your specific spouse, not generic assumptions applied carelessly. Knowledge here is relational, particular, built through attentive presence over time, not theoretical or generic.

Notice the reason given for this attentive knowledge: giving honour, and heirs together of the grace of life. The knowledge Peter calls for is not merely useful information gathering. It serves honor, treating your spouse’s specific needs, fears, and hopes as worth genuinely knowing, and it flows from a shared inheritance, equal heirs of the same grace.

This is a needed corrective against marriages that coast on early, general knowledge of a spouse, gathered in courtship and dating, never updated as both people genuinely continue changing across years of shared life. Dwelling according to knowledge is ongoing work, requiring continued attention, not a task completed once and then assumed permanently accurate.

Ask yourself honestly today whether your knowledge of your spouse has kept pace with who they have actually become, or whether you are still operating on an outdated picture. Dwell with them today according to actual, current knowledge, attentively gathered, not assumed.

Tend the Vine

  • Ask your spouse today one genuine question to update your knowledge of who they currently are.
  • Notice one assumption about your spouse that may be outdated.
  • Honor your spouse today specifically through attentive, updated knowledge, not generic assumption.

Prayer

Lord, help me dwell with my spouse according to real, current knowledge, not outdated assumptions. Let me honor them through genuine, ongoing attention. Amen.

Carry this today

Knowledge of a spouse must be ongoing, not gathered once and assumed permanent.
