“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
The Truth
One of the Spirit’s central works is conviction, and it is worth learning to tell the difference between conviction and shame, because they feel similar and function very differently. Shame says you are worthless and hides you from God. Conviction says this specific thing is wrong and draws you toward God to deal with it honestly.
The Spirit’s conviction is precise, not general. He does not leave you with a vague cloud of unworthiness. He points, specifically, at sin, righteousness, and judgment, categories with content, so that you know exactly what to bring to confession rather than wallowing in an undefined guilt that produces nothing but paralysis.
This is actually good news, even when it does not feel like it in the moment. A world with no conviction is a world sliding comfortably toward ruin with no warning lights at all. The Spirit’s conviction is the warning light doing its job, uncomfortable but protective, meant to be responded to and then released, not carried indefinitely.
When conviction comes today, do not confuse it with shame and hide. Let it do its precise work: name the specific thing, bring it to God honestly, receive what he has already promised, and move forward clean rather than carrying it.
Live This Truth
- Name one thing the Spirit has been specifically convicting you about lately.
- Distinguish it from shame: is it precise and God-ward, or vague and hiding-ward.
- Bring the specific thing to God today in honest confession, then release it.
Prayer
Spirit of God, teach me to tell your precise conviction apart from shame’s vague accusation. When you point at something specific, let me bring it to you rather than hide. Amen.
Carry this today
Conviction points and draws near. Shame accuses and hides.
