Soweth Bountifully

Part Three · Sowing · 1 minute read

← The Fallow

“But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”
2 Corinthians 9:6

The Ground

Paul writes this specifically about generosity, but the principle reaches further, into how you approach any sowing after a long fallow season. There is a temptation, after ground has lain unplanted for a long time, to sow cautiously, sparingly, testing the ground carefully before committing anything of real value to it.

This caution is understandable, but Paul names its actual cost directly: sparing sowing produces sparing reaping. It is not a neutral, risk-free strategy. It has a real result, proportional to the sparing sowing itself. Ground that only ever receives cautious, minimal seed will only ever produce cautious, minimal harvest.

This does not mean reckless, unwise sowing of everything at once without discernment. It means examining whether your own caution, after this long fallow season, has quietly become a permanent posture rather than a temporary wisdom, sowing so sparingly that even fertile, broken ground never gets the chance to actually produce much.

Consider today whether it is time to sow more bountifully than your caution has been allowing, trusting the ground that has been broken and prepared through this whole season, rather than continuing to sow as sparingly as if it were still fallow and untrustworthy.

Tend the Ground

  • Notice where caution has quietly become permanent rather than temporary wisdom.
  • Consider one area where bountiful sowing, not merely sparing, might now be appropriate.
  • Trust the broken, prepared ground enough to sow more generously into it today.

Prayer

Lord, my caution has been sparing, and my harvest has matched it. Give me courage to sow bountifully now, trusting the ground you have broken and prepared. Amen.

Carry this today

Sparing sowing produces sparing reaping. Sow as though the ground is ready.
