The Fallow · Day 24 of 30

He Knoweth Not How

Part Three · Sowing · 2 minute read

← The Fallow

“So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.”
Mark 4:26-28

The Ground

This short parable names something worth genuine relief: the man who sowed the seed does not understand the actual mechanism by which it grows. He sleeps, he rises, ordinary days pass, and the growth happens regardless of his understanding, entirely outside his direct management or control, he knoweth not how.

This is a needed correction for anyone who has approached sowing after a fallow season as if the growth depends on continuously, anxiously monitoring and managing every stage of the process. The parable pictures something more restful. The sower plants, then returns to ordinary life, sleeping and rising, while growth happens by a process he does not need to fully understand or control.

This does not remove the actual work of sowing itself, which remains real and necessary. But it releases the exhausting burden of also being responsible for the growth mechanism, as if faithful sowing were not enough and constant anxious oversight were also required for anything to actually spring up.

Whatever you have sown, in this season or seasons past, release today the burden of also managing exactly how it grows. Sleep and rise, ordinary days, while the seed does what seed does, by a process that was never meant to be yours to fully understand or control.

Tend the Ground

  • Name one area where you have been anxiously trying to manage growth you already sowed.
  • Release that management today, trusting the growth to happen by a process you need not control.
  • Return to ordinary rhythms, sleeping and rising, rather than anxious, constant monitoring.

Prayer

Lord, I have sown, and I have been anxiously trying to manage what happens next. Let me sleep and rise in ordinary rhythm, trusting the growth to a process I need not control. Amen.

Carry this today

The sower does not need to understand the growth. He only needs to sow.
