A Gift From the Hand of God

Part One · the Labor · 1 minute read

“There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.”
Ecclesiastes 2:24

The Work

The Preacher spends most of Ecclesiastes chasing meaning through achievement, pleasure, and wealth, and finding it hollow every time. It is striking, then, that this verse lands on something so plain: enjoying good in your labor is not the disappointing consolation prize after grander pursuits fail. It is named here as the actual gift.

Notice the phrase from the hand of God. The ability to find real, ordinary enjoyment in your work is not automatic and not merely a personality trait some workers happen to have. It is described as a gift given, the same way strength or wisdom is given, something to receive with gratitude rather than something you simply generate through the right attitude.

This corrects two opposite errors. One treats work as pure grind, something to survive until real life resumes elsewhere. The other treats enjoyment in work as suspicious, as if the only spiritual posture toward labor is grim endurance. Ecclesiastes says otherwise. Actual enjoyment in ordinary work is a legitimate, God-given good.

Ask for this gift today, specifically. Not just the strength to get through your work, but the grace to actually enjoy some real good in it, received as from his hand.

Do the Work

  • Notice one small, genuine good in today’s work that you have overlooked.
  • Receive it deliberately as a gift from God’s hand, not an accident.
  • Ask him today for the grace to enjoy your labor, not merely survive it.

Prayer

Lord, I have often treated my work as something to survive rather than a gift to enjoy. Give me the grace to see the good in today’s labor as coming from your hand. Amen.

Carry this today

Enjoying good work is not a consolation prize. It is a gift.
