“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”
The Work
Proverbs is a book of ordinary observations about how the world tends to work, and this is one of its plainer ones: diligence gets noticed. Not always instantly, and not always by the people you would choose, but the pattern holds broadly enough that Solomon states it as reliable wisdom. Skilled, faithful diligence tends to open doors that shortcuts and carelessness do not.
Notice this is not a promise of specific outcomes, wealth, or fame. It names a general trajectory: the diligent man’s work becomes visible enough that people of consequence take notice of it. Diligence is not primarily a strategy for advancement, but genuine diligence, over time, is rarely wasted or permanently invisible.
This should encourage the season of unglamorous, unnoticed diligence you may be in right now. The reward described here is not usually immediate. It is the long, cumulative effect of doing your business well, day after unremarked day, until the quality of the work eventually speaks for itself to people who matter.
Do not chase the recognition directly today. Chase the diligence, and trust the proverb’s plain observation: skilled, faithful work has a way of eventually being seen.
Do the Work
- Name one area where your diligence currently feels unnoticed or unrewarded.
- Recommit to the diligence itself, apart from whether it is seen right now.
- Do one piece of your work today with excellence no one has asked you to show.
Prayer
Lord, my diligence feels unseen today, but I trust the pattern of your wisdom. Let me be faithful in the work itself, and leave the noticing to your timing. Amen.
Carry this today
Diligence is rarely wasted, even when it is not yet seen.
