“Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.”
The Work
Eyeservice is a precise, uncomfortable word: work performed for the benefit of watching eyes, dropping in quality the moment those eyes look away. Paul names this specific temptation and rejects it directly. Real excellence is not calibrated to supervision. It flows from singleness of heart, a consistent character whether or not anyone is checking.
This is one of the clearest, most practical tests of whether your work ethic is rooted in genuine character or merely in managing other people’s perception of you. Ask honestly: does the quality of your effort change measurably based on who happens to be watching at any given moment? Eyeservice says yes. Singleness of heart says no.
Notice the actual foundation Paul gives for consistent effort: fearing God, not fearing your supervisor’s evaluation. This reframes the whole motivation. You are not primarily accountable to whoever happens to be watching today. You are accountable, always, to the one who sees every unwatched moment as clearly as the watched ones.
Do your work today with the same quality whether the eyes on you are many or none at all. Let the consistency itself be evidence of whose approval you are actually working for.
Do the Work
- Notice honestly whether your effort changes based on who is watching.
- Choose one unwatched task today to complete with full quality anyway.
- Reframe your motivation today around the fear of God, not the watching of people.
Prayer
Lord, expose any eyeservice in me, effort that rises and falls with who is watching. Give me singleness of heart, working the same whether seen by people or only by you. Amen.
Carry this today
Consistency, not performance for watching eyes, is the real test.
