Their Works Do Follow Them

Part Three · the Rest · 2 minute read

← The Field

“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord... that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
Revelation 14:13

The Work

Thirty days ago you began in a garden, work given before anything was broken, before sweat or thorns or vanity entered the picture. This closing verse gives the other bookend: rest finally granted, complete, from all labour, and something remarkable added to it, their works do follow them, carried forward rather than simply ending.

This is the resolution of everything this book has built toward. Rest is not the erasure of labor, as if work only mattered until it stopped and then vanished into irrelevance. It is rest from labor while the actual fruit of that labor, its works, continues forward, following the worker into whatever comes next, not lost but carried.

This should reshape how you think about the ordinary, unremarkable labor of your actual life, the garden tended, the wall built, the household kept, the trade practiced with excellence, the work done as unto the Lord rather than merely unto men. None of it, done in him, simply disappears when your own strength finally gives out.

You began this book in a garden and you end it here, at rest, with your works following you rather than left behind. Whatever field is yours to labor in for however many days remain, labor faithfully, rest honestly when rest is given, and trust that none of it, done in the Lord, was ever wasted.

Do the Work

  • Write down the single truth from these thirty days that most reshaped how you see work.
  • Name one piece of labor you hope will genuinely follow you, not merely end with you.
  • Tell one person this week something true about work you did not understand a month ago.

Prayer

Lord, I began in a garden and I end here, trusting you for rest and for works that follow rather than vanish. Let my labor, done in you, never be wasted. Amen.

Carry this today

Rest does not erase the work. The works follow.

The Work Was Never Wasted

Thirty days ago you began in a garden, work given before anything was broken.

You know now: labor done in him is not vanity. It is not in vain. It follows you.

The field is still yours to tend. Work it heartily, rest in it honestly, and trust that none of it, done in the Lord, was ever wasted.

Be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
