← The First

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33

The Treasure

This verse gives the whole book its title, and it is worth reading it exactly as ordered. Not seek the kingdom eventually, after material needs are secured. Not seek the kingdom alongside equally weighted material pursuits. Seek first, an explicit priority ranking, with all these things, the material provisions the surrounding verses describe, following as addition, not foundation.

This is a genuinely different ordering than most approaches to money instinctively assume, security first, then whatever margin remains devoted to spiritual priorities. Jesus reverses this. The kingdom is not what gets whatever is left over after material security is achieved. It is the actual first pursuit, with material provision following from that priority, not preceding it.

This does not promise the absence of material need or hardship for those who genuinely seek first. It promises something more specific, that this ordering, kingdom first, is not actually reckless or dangerous the way it might instinctively feel. All these things shall be added, not earned through separate, competing pursuit, but genuinely following seeking first.

Whatever financial priority currently sits first in your own actual practice, not merely your stated values, examine it honestly today against this verse’s explicit ordering. Seek first. Let this be the actual test this whole book will return to across its three movements, not a nice sentiment but a genuine, practiced priority.

Steward the Treasure

  • Examine honestly what actually sits first in your financial priorities, not merely stated values.
  • Reorder one specific decision today toward seeking the kingdom first, genuinely.
  • Trust today that all these things follow this priority, not a separate, competing pursuit.

Prayer

Lord, let your kingdom and righteousness genuinely be first in my actual priorities, not merely my stated values. Teach me to trust what follows from that order. Amen.

Carry this today

Seek first. Let everything else follow, not precede.
