← The First

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
Matthew 6:24

The Treasure

Jesus names mammon, wealth personified almost as a rival deity, as a genuine competitor for the same total allegiance God alone deserves. This is a stronger claim than merely warning against loving money too much. It names money as capable of functioning as an actual master, demanding the same kind of service and loyalty God himself requires.

Notice cannot, not merely should not or ought not. Jesus states this as a genuine impossibility, not a difficult but achievable balancing act. Serving both God and mammon simultaneously, as equally weighted masters, is named here as actually impossible, not merely inadvisable, requiring an actual choice between them, not a careful blend.

This is worth examining honestly against however much your own relationship to money has quietly slid toward this kind of rival mastery, decisions genuinely shaped more by money’s demands than by God’s, loyalty divided in practice even while remaining, in stated belief, entirely devoted to God alone.

Consider today one specific area where mammon may have quietly claimed the mastery this verse says cannot coexist with genuine service to God. Choose, deliberately, which master actually governs that specific decision, trusting Jesus’s claim that this genuinely is a choice, not a balance to be carefully managed indefinitely.

Steward the Treasure

  • Name one specific area where mammon may have quietly claimed mastery over your decisions.
  • Choose deliberately today which master genuinely governs that specific area.
  • Notice any belief that divided loyalty between God and money is actually sustainable.

Prayer

Lord, let me serve you alone, not mammon alongside you. Show me where divided loyalty has crept in, and give me courage to choose, genuinely, which master governs. Amen.

Carry this today

Divided loyalty between God and money is not a balance. It is not possible.
