“He leadeth me beside the still waters.”
With the Shepherd
Sheep will not drink from fast-moving or turbulent water, frightened by the noise and current, even when they are genuinely thirsty. Shepherds understood this, and part of their skilled care involved actively finding or creating still water, sometimes damming a stream themselves, so the flock could actually drink without fear overriding their need.
This is a tender detail worth noticing. The shepherd does not simply lead the sheep to water and leave them to figure out how to overcome their fear of it. He leads them specifically to still water, water made calm and approachable, matched to what the sheep can actually receive in their current state, not merely what technically exists nearby.
Consider what still waters might mean for you today. Not merely provision in the abstract, but provision made accessible to you specifically, in a form your current fear or fatigue can actually receive. God does not only provide. He leads you, specifically, to the provision made calm enough for you to actually take in.
Whatever thirst you are carrying today, trust that the shepherd is not merely aware of water existing somewhere nearby. He is leading you, specifically, toward water made still enough for you to actually drink.
Follow His Voice
- Name a thirst or need you have been afraid to approach, even though it is available.
- Ask the shepherd to lead you specifically to a still, approachable form of that provision.
- Receive today’s provision without needing to overcome fear entirely on your own first.
Prayer
Lord, you do not just provide water. You lead me to water made still enough for me to actually drink. Lead me there today, past whatever fear has kept me from it. Amen.
Carry this today
He does not just provide. He makes it approachable.
