He Maketh Me Lie Down

Part Two · the Pasture · 2 minute read

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.”
Psalm 23:2

With the Shepherd

This is a striking phrase to sit with: he maketh me to lie down. Sheep, left to their own instincts, are often too anxious to rest even in abundant pasture, restless from fear, tension with other sheep, or simple discomfort. Shepherds in this era knew that a flock will not lie down and rest until certain conditions of safety and calm are actively secured by the shepherd first.

This means the rest described here is not something the sheep achieved by finally calming themselves down through willpower. It is something the shepherd made happen, actively removing whatever was preventing rest, so that lying down became possible. Your own rest, much of the time, works the same way, dependent on conditions he secures, not conditions you manufacture alone.

Notice also this is green pastures, provision, not barren ground endured out of necessity. The rest offered here is not merely the absence of danger. It is abundance, genuine provision, a good place to actually lie down in, not simply survive in until the next demand arrives.

If rest has felt impossible to you lately, however much you have tried to will yourself into it, consider that the missing piece may not be more effort on your part. It may be trusting the shepherd to make the conditions for it, the way he made them for sheep who could not make them for themselves.

Follow His Voice

  • Notice what has been preventing genuine rest in your life, specifically.
  • Ask the shepherd today to make the conditions for rest, rather than forcing it yourself.
  • Find one green pasture today, however small, and actually lie down in it.

Prayer

Lord, I have tried to force my own rest and failed. Make the conditions for it the way you do for your sheep. Lead me to lie down in genuine, green provision today. Amen.

Carry this today

He makes the rest possible. I do not have to force it alone.
