“But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret.”
The Reality
Jesus did not say if you fast. He said when you fast. He assumed it, the way he assumed you would pray and give. Somewhere along the way the modern man quietly dropped this weapon, and we are weaker for it. Fasting is the deliberate, temporary saying no to a good thing, food, so that the soul learns to say no to a bad thing when it counts.
Understand what fasting actually trains. Hunger is the most basic, honest appetite there is. When you sit with hunger and do not immediately feed it, you are teaching your whole self a lesson it cannot learn any other way: that a craving is not a command. You can feel a strong desire, all the way to your bones, and still choose not to obey it. That is the exact skill every stronghold requires.
This is why fasting has always been paired with breaking bondage. It weakens the grip of the flesh across the board, not just at the table. A man who has practiced telling his stomach no in the quiet discipline of fasting has a trained will ready when lust, or anger, or the old comfort comes calling. The muscle you build fasting is the muscle you spend resisting.
And Jesus adds one warning: do it in secret. The reward of fasting is not the admiration of men who see how spiritual you are. That reward is cheap and it is the only one a man-pleasing faster gets. Fast quietly, before your Father who sees in secret, and the reward is a soul slowly coming back under your command. Try it this week. Feel the craving. Do not obey it. Pray instead.
The Battle Plan
- Fast from one meal today, quietly, telling no one who does not need to know.
- Each time hunger calls, turn it into a prompt to pray.
- Notice the craving, name it, and prove you do not have to obey it.
Prayer
Lord, you assumed I would fast, and I let the weapon rust. Teach me to sit with hunger and not obey it, to feel a craving without bowing to it. Do this in secret between us, and bring my flesh back under command. Amen.
Carry this today
A craving is not a command. I can feel it and still say no.
