“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
The Reality
Paul was the greatest missionary who ever lived, and he still did not trust his own body to behave itself. He disciplined it. He drove it like an athlete drives his flesh in training, keeping it under command, because he understood a hard truth: an undisciplined body will eventually shipwreck even a gifted soul. The man who cannot rule his appetites will one day be ruled by them.
Your body is a good servant and a terrible master. It is not your enemy; God made it and called it good. But left to its own cravings it wants ease, pleasure, sleep, food, and comfort with no limit, and it will happily run your whole life into the ground chasing them. The question is not whether your body has appetites. It is who is in charge.
This is why the ascetic tradition prized physical discipline: the cold morning, the hard training, the fast, the early rise, the deliberate no to a comfort the body demanded. Not because the body is evil, but because a body that has learned to obey in small things will obey in large ones. The man who conquers the snooze button is training the same muscle he will need against lust.
So put your body under command today, on purpose, in some small hard thing. Do the workout when you do not feel like it. Skip the second helping. Take the cold shower. Rise when the alarm sounds instead of bargaining. You are not punishing your flesh. You are teaching it who gives the orders, so that in the real battle it already knows how to obey.
The Battle Plan
- Choose one hard physical discipline and do it today without negotiating.
- Say no to one comfort your body demands, just to prove you can.
- Rise, train, or fast as an act of putting the body under command.
Prayer
Lord, my body wants to be the master, and too often I have let it. Teach me to keep it under command, a good servant and never the boss. Let my small disciplines today train me for the real battles ahead. Amen.
Carry this today
My body is a good servant and a terrible master.
