Choose Life

Part One · Two Ways · 1 minute read

← The Fork

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”
Deuteronomy 30:19

The Path

Moses names the stakes here with unusual directness, life and death, blessing and cursing, no ambiguity about what is genuinely at stake in the choice being presented. This is not a minor preference between two similarly acceptable options. It is named as consequential, worth this solemn, witnessed framing, heaven and earth called to record it.

Notice therefore choose life, an active imperative, not a passive hope that life will simply be chosen by default. Even with the stakes this clearly named, genuine choosing is still required, an act of will actually exercised, not assumed to happen automatically simply because the better option has been clearly identified.

This is worth applying to whatever fork you are currently facing, not assuming the better path will simply be taken by default once it has been identified, but recognizing that actual choosing, deliberate and willed, is still genuinely required, even when one direction has become relatively clear.

Whatever life and death, in whatever form they actually take at your own current crossroads, are set before you today, choose, deliberately, the way this verse instructs. Clarity about the stakes is not the same as the choice itself. The choosing still has to actually happen, today, by you.

Walk the Path

  • Name the actual stakes at your current crossroads, honestly, without minimizing them.
  • Choose, deliberately today, rather than assuming the better path will happen automatically.
  • Consider thy seed, those affected by your choice beyond only yourself, as this verse names directly.

Prayer

Lord, you have set before me life and death, blessing and cursing. Let me choose life today, deliberately, not merely assume it will happen without my actual choosing. Amen.

Carry this today

Clarity about the stakes is not the same as the choice itself. Choose.
