Liberty to the Captives

Part One · Bound · 1 minute read

← The Freed

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.”
Isaiah 61:1

The Chain

This closes the first movement of this book with a name Jesus himself later applies directly to his own ministry, reading this exact passage aloud in Nazareth. Liberty to the captives, opening of the prison to them that are bound, named as his own specific, anointed purpose, not incidental but central to his mission.

Notice captives and bound, the same honest language this whole first movement has used throughout, servant of sin, holden with cords, wist not, in want. This verse does not pretend bondage does not exist. It names it directly, captives, bound, and then names, alongside it, genuine, anointed liberty specifically for them.

This closes the loop this whole first movement has traced. Named honestly as servant of sin, admitted contradiction between wanting and doing, evil honestly acknowledged, wretchedness voiced, false liberty exposed, internal cords recognized, sin’s presence acknowledged in advance, strength’s erosion examined, actual want named honestly.

As this movement closes, receive this verse’s promise as the actual bridge toward what this book’s remaining movements will explore. You have been named honestly, bound, captive, and this verse insists liberty and opening are specifically, genuinely for you, anointed and proclaimed, not merely hoped for but actually, historically accomplished.

Break the Chain

  • Receive today that this proclaimed liberty is specifically, genuinely for you, named as bound.
  • Consider Jesus’s own application of this verse to himself as the actual source of this liberty.
  • Carry this whole first movement’s honest naming forward into this week’s exploration of breaking.

Prayer

Lord, you have anointed one to proclaim liberty to the captives, and I am one of the bound. Let this liberty be genuinely, actually mine, not merely hoped for but received. Amen.

Carry this today

Honest naming of bondage is the necessary bridge toward genuinely proclaimed liberty.
