Unfeigned Faith

Part Three · Harvest · 1 minute read

← The Fruit

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
2 Timothy 1:5

The Tree

Paul traces Timothy’s genuine faith back across three generations, grandmother, mother, and now Timothy himself, naming it unfeigned, meaning authentic, not merely performed or inherited superficially. This kind of faith did not arrive in Timothy from nowhere. It was passed, deliberately, across a real family line, generation to generation.

This offers a picture worth holding as encouragement for whatever generational faith you are hoping to pass on, and also worth holding as gratitude for whatever generational faith you yourself may have inherited from those who came before you, a mother, grandmother, or other faithful figure whose own unfeigned faith first dwelt before it ever reached you.

Notice unfeigned specifically. This is not merely religious behavior passed along as tradition or obligation, but authentic faith, genuinely held by each generation in turn, real enough that Paul is persuaded it dwells now, just as genuinely, in Timothy himself, not merely inherited outwardly but actually, personally possessed.

Consider today both directions this verse points. Thank God for whatever unfeigned faith you inherited from those who came before you, and pray specifically today for the same authentic, unfeigned faith, not merely outward religious habit, to genuinely take root and dwell in your own children as well.

Tend the Tree

  • Thank God today for whoever passed unfeigned faith to you, across however many generations.
  • Pray specifically today for genuine, not merely outward, faith to dwell in your own children.
  • Model faith today that is authentic, not performed, worth genuinely being called unfeigned.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the unfeigned faith passed to me across generations. Let that same genuine, authentic faith dwell now in my own children, not merely as outward habit. Amen.

Carry this today

Unfeigned faith is passed generation to generation, genuinely, not merely outwardly.
