The Potter and the Clay

Part One · the Fire · 1 minute read

← The Furnace

“The vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand.”
Jeremiah 18:3-6

The Refining

Jeremiah watches an ordinary craft and God turns it into a picture of his own work. The clay on the wheel does not cooperate perfectly. It resists, buckles, comes out marred under the potter’s hand. And the potter’s response is not to discard it. He reworks it, pressure and all, into another vessel, shaped as he sees fit.

Notice that the marring happens in the potter’s hand, not outside his control or despite his skill. This is not a picture of things going wrong that God then has to fix from a distance. It is a picture of the shaping process itself, pressure and resistance included, as part of how the vessel is actually formed.

Clay does not get to see the shape it is becoming while it is still being pressed. From the clay’s position, there is only pressure, spinning, and a hand it cannot fully see. The finished vessel is visible only from the potter’s side of the wheel. Your fire may feel exactly this disorienting, with the shape only he can see clearly.

You are in his hand today, being pressed toward a shape you cannot yet see. That is not out of control. That is the potter, at work, exactly as he intended.

In the Fire

  • Name where you feel most like clay under pressure right now, disoriented by the shaping.
  • Remember the marring happens in his hand, not outside his skill or control.
  • Yield today to the pressure rather than resisting the potter’s hand.

Prayer

Potter, I cannot see the shape you are making from where I sit on the wheel. Help me yield to the pressure rather than resist your hand. Make of me as seems good to you. Amen.

Carry this today

I cannot see the shape yet. He can. That is enough for today.
