The Furnace · Day 10 of 30

A Fourth Like the Son of God

Part One · the Fire · 2 minute read

← The Furnace

“He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”
Daniel 3:24-25

The Refining

Three men refuse to bow, and the furnace is heated seven times hotter as punishment, hot enough to kill the soldiers who threw them in. This is not a story where God prevents the fire. He allows Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to walk directly into it. The deliverance does not come by avoiding the furnace. It comes inside it.

Nebuchadnezzar’s own words are the center of this account. He expected to see three men destroyed. Instead he sees four men walking, unbound, unhurt, and one of them is a presence he cannot explain, like the Son of God. The fire that should have finished them became the very place where they discovered they were not alone.

This closes out everything this first movement has been building toward. Every day this week has pointed at a God who refines, sits beside, chooses in, and does not willingly afflict. This story makes it concrete: he does not always remove you from the furnace. Sometimes he walks into it with you, and that is its own kind of deliverance.

You may not be pulled out of your fire today. But you are not walking through it alone. The form of a fourth is already there, and he has walked through worse fire than this to be with you in yours.

In the Fire

  • Read Daniel 3 in full and notice what the king actually saw in the furnace.
  • Ask God today for the felt reality of his presence in the fire, not just rescue from it.
  • Walk into today’s specific heat trusting you are not walking through it alone.

Prayer

Lord, I may not be pulled from this fire today, but let me know I am not walking through it alone. Be the fourth in my furnace, as you were in theirs. Amen.

Carry this today

He does not always remove the fire. He walks into it with me.
