Findeth a Good Thing

← The Vineyard

“Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”
Proverbs 18:22

The Vine

This proverb names marriage as a good thing found, and pairs it with favour of the LORD obtained. Both words are worth noticing. Found suggests something genuinely valuable that was actually sought, not stumbled into carelessly. Obtained suggests real favor received, not merely luck, but grace given by God through this specific relationship.

This proverb is easy to hear as a general blessing on marriage in the abstract, and harder to actually apply on an ordinary Tuesday when the good thing found does not feel especially good in the moment. But the proverb does not qualify its claim by circumstance. It names marriage, generally, as good, and as favor from the LORD, even on the ordinary days.

This is worth returning to specifically on days when your spouse feels more like a burden than a blessing, more like friction than favor. The proverb’s claim was never limited to the easy seasons. It is a statement about the nature of the good thing itself, true underneath the surface of any particular day’s difficulty.

Look at your spouse today and name, specifically, what was actually found here, what favor of the LORD this relationship genuinely represents, even if today has not made that easy to see clearly on its own.

Tend the Vine

  • Name specifically what good thing was actually found in your spouse.
  • Notice one way this marriage has been favor from the LORD, even in an ordinary week.
  • Tell your spouse today, out loud, one specific thing you are grateful you found.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the good thing I found in my spouse, and for the favor this marriage represents. Let me see it clearly today, even on an ordinary day. Amen.

Carry this today

A good thing found, and favor of the LORD obtained.
