The Marriage of the Lamb

Part Three · Harvest · 2 minute read

← The Vineyard

“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.”
Revelation 19:7

The Vine

This verse looks past every earthly marriage toward the one it was always meant to picture, the marriage of the Lamb, Christ and his church, gathered at last in the fullest, most complete union scripture describes anywhere. Every earthly marriage, this whole book has suggested since day ten, was pointing toward this larger reality all along.

Notice his wife hath made herself ready, suggesting genuine preparation, active readiness rather than passive waiting. This offers a final way to view your own marriage’s ongoing work, planting, pruning, and harvest, not as an end in itself, but as part of a much larger preparation, the church itself being readied for this ultimate marriage still to come.

This does not diminish your own marriage’s real, present value. It expands it, situating your daily faithfulness, your pruning, your forgiveness, your patient companionship, within a story far larger than your own household, part of the same preparation scripture describes the whole church undergoing, readying itself for the marriage of the Lamb.

As this movement nears its close, hold your own marriage loosely within this larger picture. Whatever you are building, planting, pruning, harvesting, in your own covenant, it is not the final marriage. It is a real, honored picture of one still to come, and your faithfulness within it is part of a much larger readiness.

Tend the Vine

  • Consider today how your own marriage might be preparing you for this larger reality.
  • Rejoice today, specifically, in the picture your marriage offers of something greater.
  • Thank God that your own covenant points toward the ultimate marriage of the Lamb.

Prayer

Lord, let our marriage be a real, honored picture of the marriage of the Lamb still to come. Prepare us, in our own small household, for that ultimate readiness. Amen.
