“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.”
The Feast
This verse describes something worth sitting with directly: God’s own joy, directed specifically toward you, he will rejoice over thee with joy, he will joy over thee with singing. This is not merely your obligation to rejoice in him, the direction this whole movement has largely explored, but the reverse, his own genuine delight over you.
Notice singing, again, God’s own singing, described here with striking, almost startling specificity, not merely quiet, distant approval, but active, joyful singing, directed toward you specifically, the kind of exuberant delight a parent might show over a beloved child, described here as God’s own genuine posture.
This is worth holding as genuine encouragement against whatever sense of inadequacy or distance might make God’s delight feel unlikely or unearned. This verse does not condition his rejoicing over you on your own performance or worthiness. It describes it simply, directly, as his actual, present posture toward you.
Receive this today, specifically, as genuinely true. God rejoices over you, joys over you with singing. Let this reshape your own rejoicing in him, not merely one-directional obligation, but genuine, mutual delight, his joy over you meeting your own rejoicing in him, both directions equally real.
Keep the Feast
- Receive today that God genuinely rejoices over you, not merely tolerates or distantly approves.
- Consider how this might reshape your own sense of inadequacy or distance from him.
- Let his joy over you meet your own rejoicing in him today, mutual, not one-directional.
Prayer
Lord, thank you that you rejoice over me with joy, and joy over me with singing. Let me receive this as genuinely true, not merely something I offer to you alone. Amen.
Carry this today
God’s joy over you is real, not merely your obligation to rejoice in him.
