“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”
The Feast
David describes this abundant table specifically in the presence of mine enemies, not after enemies have been removed or circumstances have become entirely comfortable, but in the middle of ongoing genuine threat, overflow described as available even amid real, present difficulty, not only once every difficulty has fully passed.
Notice my cup runneth over, exceeding capacity, more than can actually be contained, the actual definition of overflow this movement’s title describes directly. This is not merely sufficient provision, adequate but carefully measured, but abundance exceeding what is strictly needed, spilling over its own natural container.
This offers a needed picture for whatever enemies or genuine difficulty currently surround your own life. Overflow, this verse insists, is not reserved only for seasons of complete safety and comfort. It can be genuinely present even in the middle of ongoing threat, a table prepared, oil poured, a cup running over, despite the enemies still present.
Whatever difficulty currently surrounds you, consider today whether overflow might genuinely be available even now, not deferred until every enemy has been fully removed, but present, currently, the way David describes it here, a table prepared, a cup overflowing, even in the presence of genuine, ongoing difficulty.
Keep the Feast
- Name the enemies or genuine difficulty currently present in your own life.
- Look for the table already prepared even in the middle of that difficulty, today.
- Thank God for overflow available now, not deferred until every difficulty has fully passed.
Prayer
Lord, you prepare a table before me even in the presence of my enemies. My cup runneth over, even now, even in the middle of genuine, ongoing difficulty. Amen.
Carry this today
Overflow can be present even in the middle of ongoing difficulty, not only after it ends.
