Faithful Over a Few Things

Part Two · the Excellence · 1 minute read

← The Field

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things.”
Matthew 25:21

The Work

The parable of the talents rewards two servants identically, not for the size of what they were given, but for the same quality of faithfulness with different amounts. The one given five talents and the one given two both hear the exact same commendation. Scale was never the measure. Faithfulness was.

This should reshape how you measure your own work if you have ever quietly assumed your small assignment matters less than someone else’s larger one. The master’s commendation is not calibrated to the size of the portfolio. It is calibrated to whether the servant was faithful over whatever, large or small, was actually entrusted to him.

Notice the progression: faithful over a few things leads to being made ruler over many. This is not accidental sequencing. Faithfulness with the small, unglamorous portion is consistently how scripture describes the path toward greater responsibility, not a shortcut around it through ambition or self-promotion.

Whatever few things are currently in your hands, however modest they seem next to someone else’s many, this is the actual field of your faithfulness today. Tend it well, and trust the master’s pattern of entrusting more to those faithful with less.

Do the Work

  • Name the few things currently entrusted to you, however small they seem.
  • Bring full faithfulness to them today rather than waiting for a larger assignment.
  • Release comparison to those with more, and tend your own portion well.

Prayer

Lord, whatever few things you have entrusted to me, let me be faithful over them fully today. I trust your pattern, not my own timeline for more. Amen.

Carry this today

Faithfulness with little is the actual path to more, not a detour from it.
