Commit Thy Works

“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
Proverbs 16:3

The Work

This proverb pairs an action with a promised result: commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts, your plans and mental strain over outcomes, become established, settled, no longer scattered by anxiety over things outside your control. Commitment of the work precedes the settling of the mind, not the reverse.

Most people try to reverse this order, waiting for their thoughts to feel settled and confident before committing their work to God, as if peace of mind is a prerequisite for trust rather than a result of it. This proverb suggests the opposite sequence: commit first, even while anxious, and let the settling follow the commitment rather than precede it.

Committing your works to the Lord does not mean abandoning diligence or planning carelessly, since Proverbs elsewhere praises careful, diligent planning repeatedly. It means holding the outcome loosely, offering the actual labor and its results to him, rather than gripping the results tightly as if their success depended entirely on your own control.

Whatever work is causing your thoughts to spin today, uncertain outcomes, pending decisions, unfinished projects, commit it to him specifically, by name, and let the settling of your mind follow that commitment rather than waiting for it.

Do the Work

  • Name the specific work currently causing your thoughts to spin with anxiety.
  • Commit it to the Lord today, out loud, as a deliberate act, not just a feeling.
  • Release the grip on outcomes while continuing to work diligently.

Prayer

Lord, I commit this work to you today, its outcome and its uncertainty. Establish my thoughts, not because I have earned calm, but because you hold what I have released. Amen.

Carry this today

Commit the work first. Let the settled mind follow, not lead.
