Remember the Sabbath

Part Three · the Rest · 1 minute read

← The Field

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath.”
Exodus 20:8-10

The Work

The command opens with remember, which is worth noticing. This suggests sabbath is something easily forgotten, not because people forget rest exists, but because the pull of ongoing labor is strong enough to quietly crowd it out unless it is deliberately, repeatedly recalled and protected. The command assumes forgetting is the natural default.

Notice this command sits within the same list as prohibitions against murder, theft, and idolatry. Sabbath-keeping was not treated in scripture as a minor lifestyle suggestion for the especially devout. It was placed at the center of the moral law, a command with the same weight as the others surrounding it.

Six days shalt thou labour is not a throwaway clause. The command assumes real, full labor across six days, not idleness disguised as spirituality. The rhythm here is work and rest together, both commanded, neither optional, each defining and protecting the other’s proper place.

Whatever pattern of work and rest currently governs your week, ask honestly whether it actually includes a remembered, protected sabbath, or whether labor has quietly expanded to crowd it out entirely. This command was not given as a suggestion. It was given as a rhythm worth actively remembering.

Do the Work

  • Examine honestly whether your current rhythm includes real, protected rest.
  • Name what has been crowding out sabbath rest in your life recently.
  • Deliberately remember and protect one period of rest this week.

Prayer

Lord, I forget the sabbath more easily than I realize. Help me remember it, protect it, and keep it holy, not as a suggestion but as the rhythm you commanded. Amen.

Carry this today

Sabbath must be remembered, because it is easily crowded out.
