“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
The Work
Jesus addresses this invitation specifically to those who labour and are heavy laden, not to the idle, but to the exhausted, the ones carrying real weight from real work. Rest here is not offered as an escape from labor itself, but as something given in the middle of it, to people still actively carrying loads too heavy to set down easily.
Notice what he does not say. He does not say come and I will remove all your work, or come and your labor will suddenly become light on its own. He says come unto me, positioning himself as the source of the rest, not the absence of labor as the source. The rest is found in him, alongside continued work, not only after work ends.
This matters for anyone whose season of labor cannot simply be paused, the parent, the caregiver, the worker with obligations that do not stop for a sabbatical. Jesus offers something available in the middle of ongoing labor, a rest of the soul underneath the continuing weight, not contingent on the weight first being removed.
Come to him today, specifically, with whatever labor is currently heavy. Not after the season ends, not once the workload lightens on its own, but now, in the middle of it, exactly as he invited.
Do the Work
- Name the specific labor currently making you heavy laden.
- Come to Jesus with it today, not waiting for the season to end first.
- Ask him for soul rest underneath the continuing weight, not merely its removal.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I am heavy laden with real labor today. I come to you now, in the middle of it, trusting you for the rest you promised, not only after the work ends. Amen.
Carry this today
Rest in him is found in the middle of labor, not only after it.
