Careful and Troubled About Many Things

Part Two · Tested · 1 minute read

← The Flame

“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:41-42

The Flame

Jesus names Martha’s actual condition here, careful and troubled about many things, worth noticing directly, not condemning her genuine service, elsewhere clearly valued, but naming this specific pattern, many things producing genuine trouble, crowding out the one thing needful Mary had actually chosen.

This is worth examining against however much your own love for God has been crowded by genuinely many things, not necessarily bad things, but many things, this specific quantity itself named as producing the trouble this passage describes, worth distinguishing from the singular, focused attention Mary’s own choice actually models.

Notice that good part, which shall not be taken away from her, this singular focus named as genuinely good, worth choosing deliberately, not because the many things are inherently wrong, but because this one thing needful deserves the priority Martha’s own many things had quietly displaced.

Consider today what many things currently crowd your own love for God, producing this same careful and troubled pattern, and consider choosing, deliberately, following Mary’s own example, that good part, one thing prioritized above the many things that would otherwise, quietly, continue displacing it.

Tend the Flame

  • Name honestly the many things currently crowding your own attention away from the one thing needful.
  • Choose today, deliberately, that good part, one focused priority above the many competing things.
  • Notice whether Martha’s pattern, careful and troubled, currently describes your own actual condition.

Prayer

Lord, I am careful and troubled about many things. Let me choose, like Mary, that good part, one thing needful, prioritized deliberately above whatever many things compete for it. Amen.

Carry this today

Many things, even good ones, can crowd out the one thing that is genuinely needful.
